Jimmy holds the first Comedy Awards and it's not the big hit he was hoping it would be. Throughout the entire episode, the characters keep proclaiming what a bad idea a comedy awards show is.
Trey Parker and Matt Stone are obviously attacking Comedy Central for the recent airing of their comedy awards. We’ve seen them attack Comedy Central before, specifically in the Muhammad episode when Comedy Central would not allow Parker and Stone to show Muhammad.
Parker and Stone definitely will give Comedy Central a ribbing if they think they deserve it.
Tyler Perry Won’t Leave South Park
At the comedy awards, Tyler Perry is given the Kathy Grififn award. He starts to do his Madea impression, and the only kid that laughs is Token. Even Token says “Oh, how embarrassing?” when he can’t help himself from laughing at Perry’s jokes. Even President Obama admits he watches Tyler Perry, but he also cannot help himself.
At the end of the episode, when it appears the boys have captured Funnybot and encased him in cement, it is actually Perry that is encased.
Germany Invents Funnybot
In retaliation for being named the least funny people, the Germans invent the Funnybot. The Funnybot has some pretty funny jokes. However, the Funnybot’s real purpose is to kill all of the other comics so it can be the funniest thing in the world.
Funnybot takes a jab at the state of comedy today. He says that comedy used to be “set up, then punchline. Today it’s “set up, punch-line, then awkward.”
Parker and Stone make an excellent point. A lot of comics today rely on the awkward moment after the joke rather than the actual joke itself. It’s almost as if people will spew anything that comes out of their mouth, and then wait for the awkward moment to get the laugh.
In order to stop Funnybot, Jimmy gives Funnybot a comedy award. Funnybot doesn’t understand the purpose. He argues that comedy should not be taken seriously, and if you start handing out awards for comedy, then people will start taking it seriously.
This was not one of the best episodes of South Park, but it was still entertaining. The Perry jokes were great, and Funnybot made a lot of good points about the state of comedy.
